In Shoulderstand, using the hands to support the back or obtain more lift

Why is this unhelpful? It places a great deal of strain on the neck.

Break the habit: The goal is not to send the spine up through the sacrum, but to let the sacral area rest into the fourth and fifth lumbar spine.

Remember not to hurry into the position. Take your time. Before putting your arms behind your back, try moving them into different positions — up in the air, out to the sides, behind your head. This helps to rediscover the base, so that the hands are not disconnected from the rest of the body. Leverage is not the primary objective.

Head, elbows and shoulders are the base of this asana. Vanda called it neckbalance, the neck forming the bridge between the top of the shoulders and head.
